Chapter 10: The Schedule for a New Day
A night passed without a word. Perhaps due to sheer exhaustion, Zhou Xu slept soundly through the night.
It wasn’t until the noises outside the tent disturbed him that he woke up.
Before he even opened his eyes, his rumbling stomach began to wail, jolting him fully awake.
Then, as if suddenly recalling something, he shot upright so abruptly that he nearly hit the tent’s ceiling.
“Damn it, I actually slept through the whole night?!”
Although the tribe members outside respected him as their leader and obeyed his orders, Zhou Xu reminded himself that he had only known them for less than a day.
Sleeping through the night posed significant hidden risks, enough to cause a cold sweat.
But he had to admit, he was utterly exhausted yesterday. In fact, his head was still a bit foggy now. Expecting him to remain alert all night was simply unrealistic.
Stepping out of the tent, a woman was waiting nearby. Upon seeing him, she immediately knelt down.
Zhou Xu intended to help her up, telling her not to kneel, but hunger and fatigue dulled his reflexes, and he failed to catch her in time.
“Alright, get up. Why are you standing guard here?”
“We didn’t dare disturb the chief’s rest, so we waited here for you to wake and give instructions.”
Perhaps because of his actions yesterday, the tribe members now dared not act without his orders.
Looking up at the sky, it was still dark; he guessed it was around five or six in the morning.
Since they had gone to bed early last night, they had likely slept nine to ten hours.
Standing outside, breathing in the crisp morning air, Zhou Xu immediately felt a bit more alert.
“What’s your name?”
“My name is Butterfly.”
Zhou Xu nodded, vaguely recalling the woman named Butterfly.
“Were you the one at the altar?”
If he remembered correctly, it was Butterfly who handed him the animal hide then.
She nodded nervously in confirmation.
Zhou Xu asked casually, then turned toward the still-burning fire.
“Alright, no more kneeling.”
Seeing the tribe members about to kneel again along the path, Zhou Xu felt a headache coming on and stopped them just in time.
“From now on, when you see me, just do this and bow your head—that will be enough to show respect.”
As he spoke, Zhou Xu placed his left hand behind his back, clenched his right fist over his chest, and bowed slightly.
He didn’t forbid them from showing submission; consolidating his authority was important.
But kneeling every time was too exhausting and inefficient.
The tribe members quickly imitated his gesture.
At first, it felt awkward, but the motion was simple. After a few tries, they adapted and found it much more convenient.
“Why, no one has even had water since waking up?” Zhou Xu asked, noticing several bowls made from nutshells filled beside the fire.
He looked around at the tribe members, who were all staring at him expectantly.
He soon realized that in a scarce-resource tribe like this, even water had to be rationed by the leader.
Without wasting time, Zhou Xu took a bowl and drank a sip, moistening his throat.
“Feather, starting today, you’ll be responsible for distributing water every morning. After everyone drinks, keep boiling the remaining water…”
Taking advantage of the moment when the tribe was gathered around drinking, he began assigning tasks to his thirty-one followers.
“Butterfly, you and your four companions will continue weaving baskets and making bark ropes today.”
Considering the tribe’s population, eight baskets were hardly enough for gathering sufficient food. To catch more, they needed to cast a wider net.
This required more basket traps.
Butterfly and the other four had proven their craftsmanship to him yesterday.
“You two, handle stripping bark and tend the fire to boil water.”
As he counted heads and gave orders, Zhou Xu continued.
“Dashan, you and your group of ten will mainly gather branches, stones, and catch insects later. I’ll give detailed instructions soon.”
Collecting branches, stones, and insects sounded simple, but the workload was far from light.
Especially gathering branches.
At this stage, due to the water supply issues, branches—the main fuel—were the tribe’s greatest resource drain.
Relying solely on manual branch collection was inefficient.
This meant they had to allocate more manpower to ensure the fire kept burning, providing a steady supply of fresh water.
“Then, Feather, you and your seven will each take a basket and divide the insect heads and guts collected yesterday.”
Seeing some tribe members eager to jump in, he quickly warned:
“This is not for eating. Do not eat this.”
Hearing this, the tribe members tensed up, and their urge to stuff the stuff into their mouths instantly faded.
Before, their hunger impulses would have been overwhelming.
But after tasting those delicious roasted insects yesterday, the sight of insect heads and guts was unappetizing by comparison.
“The way to use this will be explained later.”
Zhou Xu paused, thinking about what else needed arranging.
In truth, there were many tasks, but most required his supervision. Left to themselves, the tribe members likely wouldn’t manage well.
And he was only one person.
So, in the limited time, he focused on a few essential matters.
These tasks weren’t difficult by nature; once he taught them, he could move on to other things.
“You six, split into two groups of three, patrol around the tribe to ensure safety. If anything happens, run to the Black Forest and notify us immediately. The rest, follow me.”
Saying this, Zhou Xu led the way toward the nearby Black Forest.
During this short walk, he organized his thoughts.
Before sleeping yesterday, he had outlined a grand plan, but fatigue clouded his mind, so the specific arrangements for today weren’t very clear.
By time needed, he should have started setting traps first, since hunting prey takes time.
But for the same reason, he needed to demonstrate the trapping method first, so the tribe members clearly knew what to do before he leftI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
