I will post a dedicated chapter to discuss this.
I was busy with work and submitting documents today when I saw a new reader complaining about the protagonist holding back against Maine’s crew.
Essentially, it seems my writing fell short, making the protagonist appear a bit too "merciful."
So, I went back and carefully re-examined the protagonist's mindset: Suppose I had transmigrated into the game world, knowing the moving stories behind characters like Maine. How would I handle such a situation? Fortunately, the mission from Mr. Hands was to persuade the crew to stand down. Lin Yue was well aware that they had come to eliminate him, and the sniper rifle served as the boundary he established between them—a way to keep the situation from escalating into a fight to the death.
But that wasn't enough, so I went back and refined the protagonist's internal monologue. It seems to flow better now.
At the beginning of this story, my intention was to show that the protagonist had not yet realized this is the man-eating Night City; his player-like, game-oriented mindset dominated his actions. It wasn't until he was betrayed by Mr. Hands that he understood the reality: the idea of negotiating contracts with fixers as if he were the game character V was a fantasy. A dispensable pawn could be sold out at any moment. When he lost his arm, the protagonist finally woke up.
And so, the revenge begins.
Regarding this point, I looked through hundreds of book reviews, and fewer than ten mentioned it. Logically, I should have ignored it or stood by my original writing. But in the end, I couldn't convince myself.
I write because I want to create something that people love and that I feel comfortable with. Every reader has a different personality; some prefer a ruthless protagonist, while others think holding back against Maine’s crew is perfectly understandable, given the system rewards and the protagonist's memories of his past life.
I wanted to find a middle ground—to capture that critical threshold where everyone understands that if the protagonist is provoked further, he will show no mercy, while simultaneously conveying his genuine sympathy for this legendary crew, which makes him reluctant to kill them. That is how the two revised chapters came to be.
I don’t really have much talent; I just enjoy playing Cyberpunk 2077 and writing novels. I cannot match the prose of the masters, but what I can do is reflect on my work and focus on writing this book as well as I possibly can.
That is all I have to say. I hope those who felt uncomfortable with that plot point will go back and take a look, then offer their feedback. As long as the core outline remains unchanged, I am more than happy to grow alongside the protagonist, Lin Yue, within the story.
The chapters are scheduled for release at 7:00 PM. Please, keep following along!
Wishing you all the best in life.
