Song Qingyou closed the door, feeling as if all her strength had been drained, her heart aching so painfully she felt suffocated. She leaned against the door, tilting her head back, desperately trying to hold back her tears. To prevent her from seeing those wounds and worrying, he had deliberately changed clothes, wrapping himself tightly, even sleeping with his clothes on. Did he really think that by rubbing some color onto his lips and face, she wouldn’t notice? Fu Wenzhou, you truly are foolish. Yet, there was no denying... it was heartbreaking.

Song Qingyou tightly gripped the celadon medicine bottle in her hand, exhaling slowly to calm herself before stepping into the bedroom. Dawn was just breaking, and Fu Wenzhou was breathing evenly, fast asleep. She set the bottle aside and gently began to undo his clothes, moving slowly since he showed no sign of waking. Quietly, she slipped off his jacket, and when the last layer of fabric was removed, Song Qingyou finally saw the full extent of his injuries.

The man’s entire upper body was wrapped in gauze, originally white but now stained red with blood. Song Qingyou’s fingers froze momentarily; she lacked the courage to undo the bandages further. At that moment, Fu Wenzhou stirred awake, lifting his eyelids, still unaware that his poor attempts at concealment had been uncovered. The first thing he saw upon opening his eyes was Song Qingyou, and a satisfied look crossed his face. “You’re up so early, Youyou?”

Song Qingyou’s arm trembled slightly as she silently looked at him, remaining quiet for a long time. So long that Fu Wenzhou found it odd. Sitting up, he reached out to hold her, only to suddenly realize he was missing his clothes. Looking down at his bandaged body, his first reaction was panic as he tried to explain, “Youyou, listen, it’s not serious at all. Yunian’s medicine works well. It doesn’t hurt—it’s just superficial wounds. So please don’t be upset, don’t cry, okay?”

He wanted to embrace her, but even a simple movement made him break out in a sweat, struggling painfully. Although his injuries had somewhat improved after a few days of rest on the island, trekking through the forest for days and nights and fighting a forest python had reopened the wounds, causing infection that was even worse than before. He had hidden this because he feared Youyou would worry. But now she already knew.

Fu Wenzhou’s face was tense, his forehead covered in sweat as he struggled to get up. “Don’t move,” Song Qingyou said firmly.

Fu Wenzhou froze, not moving further, his eyes fixed intently on Song Qingyou. She stepped forward and cradled his head, gently stroking the ends of his hair. “Fu Wenzhou, shall we change the dressings?”

“No!” he instinctively refused, his tone becoming urgent. “Let Yunian do it. Don’t look, don’t look…” His voice gradually softened into a low plea: “Please don’t look, Youyou.”

Song Qingyou’s slender fingers ran through his black hair and, applying a little pressure, he had no choice but to look up at her. “If you’re worried about me, then don’t do such dangerous things. You only think about me after doing them,” she said softly, lowering her gaze. “Fu Wenzhou, take off your pants.”

He was momentarily stunned, not expecting such a sudden change of topic. In the presence of Song Qingyou, he was naturally obedient, always listening without hesitation. So before his mind could catch up, his body had already started moving. He unbuckled his belt and slowly slid his pants down.

Song Qingyou frowned slightly, bent over, and gently pushed his hand away to help him remove them herself. Fu Wenzhou’s ears flushed red, a bit pleased. “Youyou, this is the first time you’ve helped me take off my clothes.”

She said nothing, tossing the pants aside and began to unwrap the gauze from his upper body. The gruesome sight stabbed at Song Qingyou’s eyes. She had known he was seriously injured but had never imagined that not a single patch of flesh remained untouched. The necrotic flesh and blood were stuck together like wounds gnawed by worms, with fresh blood continuously oozing from the deep crimson sores.

Flesh was mangled and riddled with holes.

“Does it… hurt?” Song Qingyou’s eyes stung; she fought back tears, her voice hoarse and trembling. Fu Wenzhou replied, “No, it doesn’t hurt. You know me—I have thick skin and tough flesh; I can endure pain.”

Song Qingyou didn’t believe him. She carefully used a cotton ball to treat each wound, her movements gentle, afraid of causing him pain. Fu Wenzhou joked to lift her spirits, but Song Qingyou couldn’t smile. It took an hour to clean and redress the wounds on his upper body.

After finishing, she started removing the bandages from his legs. Fu Wenzhou pulled his foot back slightly, smiling awkwardly. “Yunian said the medicine on my leg only needs to be changed every two days. I changed it just last night.”

Song Qingyou frowned lightly. “The medicine needs to be changed at least once every morning and evening. You must have misunderstood.”

“No, I definitely didn’t,” Fu Wenzhou said, trying to appease her. “Youyou, really, no need to—”

Song Qingyou narrowed her eyes, sensing something amiss, and quickly untied the bandage straps. “No need, sister…” Fu Wenzhou was covered in wounds and could barely move; he couldn’t stop her, only watch helplessly as the blood-stained cloth unraveled.

When the gauze fell away, Song Qingyou was stunned, her face draining of color. Her gaze fixed on Fu Wenzhou’s right calf. Slowly, she lifted her head, tears streaming down instantly. “Fu… Fu Wenzhou, why… why is there cotton inside?”

Her voice trembled violently; she looked like a frightened fawn, confused. “How could… how could a piece of flesh be missing?”

The wound was surrounded by teeth marks, exposing raw flesh and bare white bone. The cotton, soaked in blood, had clumped together. Fu Wenzhou smiled faintly, reached out to wipe her cheek, and gently brushed away her tears. “It’s okay. It will heal.”

Song Qingyou’s eyes were glazed with bloodshot veins. After a long moment, her confusion turned into overwhelming grief that swept through her entire being, eating away at her insides, leaving her in unbearable pain.

“Ah!” Song Qingyou clutched her chest and let out a piercing cry, as if her pain had reached its peak.

Fu Wenzhou suddenly panicked, struggling to get out of bed to hold her. “Youyou, it’s okay, Yunian said it will heal, it’s just a matter of time. I’m not in pain, really, I’m not.”

Song Qingyou was utterly devastated, crying so hard she seemed on the verge of collapse. How could she believe there was no pain after having flesh literally bitten away? How could it not hurt?

She felt as if her heart was breaking. She cried silently, her face paling, then began coughing, one fit after another, nearly suffocating.

Fu Wenzhou was gravely alarmed. He pulled out his phone and called Xu Zezhan urgently, “Get Yunian up here, quick! Get Yunian up here!”
