Song Qingyou put away the ointment, turned around, and scooped up a spoonful of porridge, hoping to sidestep the subject.

Fu Wenzhou pressed on. “If you like someone, you like them. What do you mean by ‘should’?”

Song Qingyou felt a headache coming on. She had never been rich in emotion; growing up in the Song family’s cold, profit-driven world, she had poured all her energy into revenge. And now, the balance had long since tipped between Fu Wenzhou and that vengeance.

Fu Wenzhou was, of course, important to her.

But if one day they were to part, Song Qingyou would not, like Fu Wenzhou, be unable to go on living. In her understanding, the world would keep turning with or without anyone.

For now, they had not broken up, so naturally she would place him first.

After thinking it over, she looked at him again. “Didn’t I already tell you I like you? Why are you asking again?”

Fu Wenzhou gave a soft snort. Of course he had to ask. This was the sort of thing that needed to be confirmed again and again. What if one day she stopped liking him?

He had to be sure she liked him today just as much as she had yesterday before he could feel at ease.

Fu Wenzhou made a demand. “You have to like me a little more than yesterday, every single day.”

“...”

Song Qingyou could not be bothered to deal with him anymore and turned her head to drink her porridge.

Fu Wenzhou crouched in front of her like a big dog. Beside his leg, the puppy was lying sprawled out, both man and dog staring straight at her.

After a few bites, Song Qingyou finally could not stand those scorching eyes any longer and muttered, “Fine.”

The corners of Fu Wenzhou’s narrow eyes slowly curved. He picked up the puppy and sat down beside her.

After a while, Song Qingyou said, “Fu Wenzhou.”

“Mm?” he replied lazily.

She looked at him. “Do you want the love between us to be equal?”

Fu Wenzhou’s eyes lit up. “Of course.”

Song Qingyou nodded. “Then how about this: I love you a little more every day, and you love me a little less every day. Is that okay?”

Fu Wenzhou’s handsome face instantly went rigid.

Song Qingyou tried to reason with him. “That way, our love will slowly become equal.”

Fu Wenzhou gave a cold laugh. “You want to control the sky and the earth, and now you want to control whether people shit and piss too.”

Song Qingyou’s face darkened. “I’m eating.”

Fu Wenzhou was so furious he did not want to speak to her anymore. He should never have brought it up; all it did was make himself angry.

Seeing him storm off in a rage, Song Qingyou lowered her eyes and murmured, “Idiot. If you love me a little less every day, then when you come to my gravestone in the future, you won’t cry.”

After dinner, Fu Wenzhou seemed to have forgotten all about the earlier unpleasantness and came over again, insisting on kissing her.

Song Qingyou was forced to sit in his lap while dealing with documents, her expression somewhat helpless. “Stop fooling around. I still have work to do.”

Fu Wenzhou buried his face in the crook of her neck, greedily inhaling the clean, fragrant scent on her. He loved that smell. “Youyou, do you know what I thought the first time I came here?”

Without waiting for her answer, he went on, “The moment I stepped inside, I knew that one day, I’d be here—in the kitchen where you cook, in the bathroom where you bathe, on your bed, at your desk, in every corner of your room, doing you until you cry.”

The man let out a low laugh, his voice rough and husky. “I’d do you until you cry.”

Faced with his sudden vulgarity, Song Qingyou’s eyes flickered. She suddenly closed the file in her hands and turned to look at him. “Want to try it?”

“Hmm?”

“The desk. We haven’t tried that yet.”

“...Damn!”

Outside the window, tree shadows swayed as the wind slipped through the cracks, mingling with the gasping breaths inside the room. Song Qingyou was shifted into several different positions; the corners of her eyes went wet, and she cried as she begged for mercy.

Fu Wenzhou coaxed her in a hoarse voice, “Be good, Youyou. I’ll make you feel good.”

Song Qingyou was utterly exhausted and slept until the middle of the night. It felt as though her whole body had been taken apart and put back together again. She had started this affair, yet she had no say over when it ended.

The man was like a wolf dog just released to the flesh for the first time: once he latched on, he would not let go. He still refused to give her any real relief, all while sweet-talking her and pretending he was afraid of breaking her.

Just thinking of those blush-inducing words made Song Qingyou’s face burn as red as if it had been boiled.

Mortified and angry, she was seething with resentment and wanted nothing more than to go pick a fight with Fu Wenzhou.

Why was it always her who ended up so exhausted she could barely stand, while he still looked full of energy?

That was unfair.

But when Song Qingyou braced her aching body and went out to look around, she could not find Fu Wenzhou anywhere.

The realization that Fu Wenzhou was not at home, and had not told her where he had gone, left her faintly displeased. Even she did not notice the crease between her brows, or how sharply her mood began to sink.

She went back to the bedroom, found her phone, and confirmed once more that there was no message from him. The blush of post-intimacy embarrassment on her face disappeared completely, replaced by a growing chill.

She threw on a coat and sat on the sofa in the living room, her eyes fixed on the clock on the wall.

When the hands pointed to two o’clock, the lock clicked.

“Welcome to the home of Song Qingyou and Fu Wenzhou.”

Fu Wenzhou opened the door and stepped in, bringing with him a bone-chilling gust of winter air. Carefully, he took the thing in his arms out and tested the temperature with his palm along the edge of the box.

Still warm.

The corners of Fu Wenzhou’s lips lifted as he reached over to switch on the light.

The moment it came on, he saw Song Qingyou sitting on the sofa with her knees hugged to her chest.

His brow furrowed at once. In a few quick strides, he was in front of her, crouching down. “Why are you up? It’s cold outside. Go back to bed.”

Song Qingyou did not move. She simply stared at him without blinking.

Being looked at that way made Fu Wenzhou’s skin prickle. He carefully thought through whether he had recently done anything deranged or unreasonable. After confirming that he had not, he finally spoke.

“Elder sister~”

In any case, whether he had done something wrong or offended someone, he would call her elder sister first and talk later.

By his experience, at crucial moments, “elder sister” worked better than anything else.

Sure enough, Song Qingyou slowly spoke, her tone carrying a grievance even she had not noticed. “You went out.”

“Mm?”

“You didn’t tell me.”

Fu Wenzhou looked baffled. “You were asleep.”

Song Qingyou drew in a breath. “You also didn’t text me.”

Fu Wenzhou fell silent.

After a pause, Song Qingyou seemed to be explaining her own behavior, yet also comparing it to his. “You used to tell me.”

Fu Wenzhou froze for a moment, then surprise and delight slowly rose in his eyes. “You got angry because you woke up and didn’t see me?”

Song Qingyou did not answer.

Fu Wenzhou suddenly stood up, looking delighted as he paced back and forth twice. “I knew it! You were already hopelessly in love with me. I only stepped out for a moment and you got this upset. Admit it, elder sister, you just love me to death.”

Song Qingyou’s brows drew together; she wanted to remind him that he had missed the point.

But the mad dog showed no sign of stopping. “Youyou, you can’t love me this much already.”

“?”

“If you’re already this madly in love with me now, what are we going to do when the time comes? We said you’d love me a little more every day.”

“...”

Fu Wenzhou looked genuinely troubled. He was tall to begin with, and once he stood in front of Song Qingyou, he blocked out all the light before her.

Song Qingyou took a deep breath and deeply understood how ridiculous it was to argue with a half-witted husky over this.

She silently put on her slippers, reached out to shove him aside, and headed toward the bedroom.

Fu Wenzhou hurried after her, not forgetting to pick up the bag on the dining table. “Youyou, the new chef at Xu Zezhan’s place makes excellent Cantonese food. I haven’t learned that cuisine yet, so I went to the Xu house and had someone make some for you to bring back.”

Song Qingyou stopped in disbelief. “You went to someone else’s house in the middle of the night and made their chef get up to cook?”

“I paid him five times his usual wage.” Fu Wenzhou did not see anything wrong with that at all. He took the insulated container out like he was presenting treasure. “I kept it warm all the way back. It’s still hot.”
