Chapter 112: Godzilla Derivatives
The United States had no desire for its staunch Asian ally to receive another nuclear delivery. Therefore, the operation plan led by Rando Yaguchi received full support from the U.S. military forces stationed in the region.
Just off the coast of Tokyo Bay, a naval fleet waited for his command.
Upon receiving the "Fire Missiles" directive via communication, countless missiles tore through the sky, launching from the sea!
"BOOM!"
The missiles, descending from the heavens, struck with precision the load-bearing structures of the towering skyscrapers surrounding Godzilla. The meticulously calculated demolitions caused one multi-ton building after another to collapse squarely onto the monster.
"ROAR!"
A piercing beastly cry echoed across the horizon. Even Godzilla’s body, after prolonged emission of its radioactive heat ray, could not withstand the crushing weight of the architectural debris—not to mention the numerous missiles that had struck it directly. Finally, amidst a earth-shaking tremor, Godzilla was pinned down beneath the ruins.
"Quick! Get the pump units in! Inject the coolant!" Yaguchi commanded without a moment’s hesitation.
More than a dozen trucks equipped with specialized pumps swarmed out from their hiding spots. A dozen mechanical arms poked into Godzilla’s mouth, which was pressed against the ground, and began pumping coolant inside.
"Dosage at 20%... 25, 30..." On the command platform, an officer in camouflage reported the injection progress. It seemed that if they simply followed the plan, they would successfully complete the injection and freeze Godzilla.
"Sss-"
"BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!"
Godzilla, pinned under the rubble, suddenly lifted its head. A stream of purple light, glowing with white heat, instantly plowed a path of magma through the street where the pump trucks were stationed! The trucks exploded into balls of fire, and that demonic body stood once again upon the earth!
"Dosage is under 50%! Pump unit one... completely wiped out. Minister?"
"Continue the plan!" Yaguchi’s eyes were bloodshot, but his tone held no hesitation. "We’ve come this far; we must see it through!"
"Yes! Demolition team, prepare!" The officer in camouflage understood his superior’s resolve and immediately issued further instructions.
Within the guard unit, Wakatsuki Takeshi stared, mouth agape, at his watch. "After that relentless energy attack, it was only pinned down for... less than five minutes? And it can fire the ray again?"
"This regenerative ability... it’s terrifying!" Everyone gazed in shock at the towering figure in the distance.
From a human perspective, even for an elite athlete, it would be impossible to return to peak physical condition within three days after a grueling, high-intensity competition. Yet, Godzilla not only supported its massive, terrifying weight but also unleashed those energy attacks that made one’s skin crawl—all while being able to return to the fray after a mere five-minute rest!
Earthquake-like footsteps began to move; the massive body seemed to blot out the sky itself. For some reason, the re-risen Godzilla was walking directly toward the command platform.
"It—it’s coming this way?! Why here?! Why?!" The officer in camouflage was first bewildered, then struck by a fear as if the world were collapsing! As that towering, malevolent, grotesque figure approached, even the air seemed to be shoved aside!
"Stay calm!" Yaguchi’s legs were shaking, but he stiffened his neck, forcing himself to confront the beast that had invaded his nation. "It has organs like a phased-array radar; it’s no surprise it can detect the dense electromagnetic waves here! Continue the plan!"
Because the command platform required constant issuance of orders, the electromagnetic density here was certainly high. Yaguchi didn't know if his hypothesis was correct, but he knew he had to maintain the appearance of a fearless leader.
The plan continued. As Godzilla, like a moving mountain, stepped onto the tracks, several trains pre-loaded with explosives roared toward it. The explosions, combined with the trains being blasted through the air and wrapping around Godzilla like a multi-segmented whip, pinned the monster down once more.
The pump team followed the same procedure. Perhaps because the previous coolant had taken effect, this time, the downed Godzilla appeared to have less strength. The chemical agents were injected at maximum pressure.
"Dosage at 60%... 70! ... 80!" The officer's report was filled with the joy of surviving a catastrophe as the numbers climbed. Each figure reported was a piece of good news. Everyone on the command platform beamed with delight.
Yaguchi couldn't help but exhale. "Excellent! We can do this!"
But below on the command platform, within the guard unit, Hakudo Kyou lowered his arms, which had been crossed over his chest. His posture shifted from relaxed to tense. Beneath his mask, his pupils glowed with a faint violet fluorescence as he adjusted his focus. His eyes were locked onto Godzilla’s dangling tail.
In a fleeting, unintentional glance, he had noticed that something had fallen off the tip of that tail... something humanoid!
"Saeko, Master, it seems we won't be able to just watch the show," the young man said, his tone heavy with a hint of imperceptible anticipation.
The two beside Hakudo hadn't even had time to express their confusion at his words.
"What the—! Ahhh!"
On the joyous command platform, a sudden, chaotic noise erupted from the pump unit’s channel. First came the screeching of twisting steel, followed by the panicked, shrill wails of human beings. Almost instantly, the mechanical arms on the pump trucks lost power and went limp. The injection had stopped!
The smiles on everyone’s faces froze, turned to ice by a sudden, bone-chilling dread.
"Pump unit! Pump unit, respond!" The officer in camouflage shouted anxiously, watching as Godzilla began to try to climb to its feet again.
The members of the guard unit felt the atmosphere sour. In unison, they adjusted their bodies into a state of combat readiness. Their caution was soon proven to be justified.
"Rat-tat-tat!"
"Agh!"
On the first floor of the building housing the command platform, gunfire erupted, followed immediately by the screams and wails of the perimeter guards!
"What? What’s happening?!" The officer in camouflage scrambled toward the edge of the rooftop, peering down.
Before he could lean out, the upper torso of a man still clutching a rifle was hurled onto the rooftop, brushing past his head! The corpse's blood splattered the officer’s face and head, splashing across the ground. Viscera spilled from the wound.
But no one cared about a corpse with such a miserable end. Because a "thing" resembling a human had crawled up the outer wall like a gecko and onto the rooftop railing!
It was at least three meters tall—five meters including its tail! Its limbs were gaunt, devoid of skin, and seemingly lacking any muscle structure, appearing sharp and horrific. It looked like a wet, alien skeleton. Only the chest cavity was covered in layers of flesh, as if to protect vital organs. Spikes resembling Godzilla’s dorsal fins were arranged from its tail up to its spine.
More than a creature, it looked like a demon from mythology!
And now... the demon was lunging forward!
