Chapter 142: Bedivere's Enthusiasm (Please Subscribe!)
The personnel composition of this underground research facility was so diverse it could rival a universal exposition.
Yet, even among the weakest nations, at least one leader within their team had undergone genetic enhancement. This was because enhanced individuals inherently represented a nation's formidable national power, capable of acquiring Godzilla's flesh through various means. They also symbolized a strong willpower capable of subduing the beastly nature of Titans.
For global superpowers like the British Empire, both team leaders ought to have been enhanced individuals.
However, right now, while the enhanced individuals inside the facility who had gained power through transplantation felt no difference at all, Tokita Niko could clearly perceive that the middle-aged man dressed in a gentleman's suit standing before him was simply an ordinary human.
He was completely different from yesterday.
What were these two planning? Moreover, walking into a radiation zone like this, wasn't this ordinary man afraid of dying?
Tokita Niko remained expressionless, wanting to see what the true objective of the British Empire was.
That ordinary man was indeed not afraid of death.
He was a failure eliminated during the Round Table selection process. Having become a knight's squire, the sole meaning of his life was to offer absolute loyalty to the British Empire and the Knights of the Round Table.
"Gawain" forcefully suppressed the metallic taste filling his nasal cavity, gracefully pulling a handkerchief from his pocket and waving it before his nose. Without arousing any suspicion, he wiped away the blood flowing from his nose.
To an outsider, this merely looked like an aristocrat showing his dissatisfaction with the sweat and body odor of martial artists working out all over the room.
His tongue flicked against his left molar, where an anti-bleeding pill was lodged. After swallowing it, the speed of his blood flow suddenly decreased, naturally halting the hemorrhage.
Yet, enduring a drop in blood flow severe enough to cause unconsciousness, "Gawain" merely kept a natural expression as he averted his gaze from Tokita Niko's face and looked around.
He acted just like someone whose attention had been captured by the distant training of the enhanced individuals.
Bedivere warmly stepped closer to Tokita Niko, placing himself right between him and "Gawain."
"Mr. Tokita, yesterday's match was truly breathtaking."
The handsome young man with blonde hair and blue eyes spoke with sincere earnestness, resembling a genuine fan who deeply admired the power Tokita Niko had displayed yesterday.
"It seems you haven't been here before. Please allow me to introduce the place. Oh, and as for Mr. 'Gawain,' please don't mind him; his throat feels a bit uncomfortable today."
His strictly trained social smile and tone made the conversation feel as comfortable as catching up with a long-lost friend, leaving no room for refusal.
Tokita Niko was more than happy to watch the other party's "monkey show."
A playful smile hung on the corner of his lips as he walked along with Bedivere and "Gawain."
The entire indoor gymnasium was circular, with a platform holding a metal spherical device at its center.
Dozens of radiation-proof surveillance cameras were distributed around the perimeter. They also shouldered the responsibility of mapping and measuring the training effects of the enhanced individuals.
Concentric circles of varying colors radiated outward from the center platform.
The martial artists working out here were scattered across these different concentric circles.
Wakatsuki Takeshi and Kureishi Mitsuyo, individuals still in the stage of bestial transformation, were located on the second-to-last circle. They were executing karate katas strictly and methodically.
Kure Raian was a short distance behind them, gritting his teeth as he pushed through physical conditioning.
Meanwhile, masters like Kuroki Gensai, Doppo Orochi, and even those who had arrived just yesterday—Retsu Kaioh, Guo Chuncheng, and Kwon Ji-shin—had pushed their power far beyond the realm of bestial transformation. They were already deep in the center, stationed right next to the platform.
Occasionally, individuals on the outer ring would grit their teeth, veins bulging on their foreheads, trying to force themselves a few steps closer to the center circle. Yet, after lasting barely a few minutes, they would invariably be forced to retreat to the outer ring, panting heavily to rest.
Bedivere and Tokita Niko crossed several circles as leisurely as if they were taking a stroll. The blonde, blue-eyed youth talked as he walked, playing the part of a competent tour guide.
"Ever since the orthodox Godzilla came ashore in Tokyo, Monarch has noticed a drastic reduction in the residual radiation left behind by mutant Godzillas."
"Their conclusion is that orthodox Titans do not release radiation; on the contrary, it is their food source. Theoretically speaking, this substance should be beneficial to us as well."
Saying this, Bedivere shrugged jokingly.
"Since there's a hypothesis, we might as well test it. After all, enhanced individuals aren't fragile creatures that fall sick from mild radiation exposure."
"Looking at it this way, the results seem pretty good," Tokita Niko said with his hands buried in his pockets, his tone giving away neither joy nor anger.
The fellow in front of him was talking as if he intended to lead him right into the center. The fake "Gawain" trailing behind was the same; though his steps remained steady and graceful—just like a gentleman strolling down a London street—Tokita Niko's extraordinary auditory system could detect that varying degrees of internal bleeding had already occurred in all of his organs.
This was an area where even some enhanced individuals found it grueling, yet an ordinary human had forced himself to walk all the way here.
The agony he was enduring was probably no less painful than disembowelment.
Bedivere showed no signs of concern for "Gawain" whatsoever. He continued his enthusiastic explanation.
"The radiation generating device in the center is an experimental machine pulled from the radiation lab. It's said to be used for testing the impact of high-intensity radiation on metal fatigue properties."
"The intensity certainly cannot compare to a nuclear weapon or a power plant, but for the human body, it's already an unimaginably high reading."
Guided by Bedivere's deliberate positioning, Tokita Niko was led, amidst light banter, to the edge of the central circle, close to where Guo Chuncheng was located.
This robust young man with disheveled hair emanated a wild, untamed aura. Unlike the others in the center who were either meditating or training, he showed no intention of practicing whatsoever.
Right now, he was lying comfortably at the center where the radiation was strongest, basking as if he were catching some sun.
Whether out of respect for a powerful individual capable of walking into the inner circle or simply out of international courtesy, the figures in the center all nodded in greeting as they approached.
Tokita Niko and Bedivere smiled and returned the gesture.
Soon, however, the atmosphere began to change.
Bedivere shifted the topic, sincerely praising Tokita Niko's performance in yesterday's battle as if he had witnessed it with his own eyes.
This subject had already been touched upon at the entrance. Bringing it up again now made it clear to Tokita Niko that he was setting the stage for something using this topic.
Consequently, his polite smile gradually turned amused.
Hearing this, Guo Chuncheng, lying flat on the ground, merely frowned. Any hot-blooded young man would feel somewhat displeased hearing someone praised in the very field where he considered himself most proficient.
Immediately following that, however, the blonde youth steered the conversation toward the former Kengan Annihilation Tournament. Like a veteran fan, he praised Tokita Niko for achieving a complete victory over Kuroki Gensai, a master who had once received guidance from the legendary Kaku Kaioh.
He deliberately placed heavy emphasis on the words "received guidance from Kaku Kaioh."
Kuroki Gensai, who had been meditating, slowly opened his eyes and shot a sharp, piercing glare at Bedivere.
By this point, the young man fully understood what Bedivere was plotting.
*Swish—*
Amidst the sound of air being torn apart, Guo Chuncheng, who had been lazily lying in the center enjoying the radiation, suddenly appeared right in front of Tokita Niko as if a frame in a film had been abruptly skipped.
Simultaneously, the dozens of surveillance cameras scattered across the room seemed to detect the sudden indoor disturbance instantly. They whiveled in unison, locking their lenses onto the high-energy-emitting Guo Chuncheng and everyone standing near him.
