Volume One, Chapter 103: Chu Yue Also Wants to Pursue Ye Sheng
Chu Yue didn’t dare mention that Huo Mingting suspected Ye Sheng of being involved with other men—not because he feared Ye Sheng would cause trouble for Huo Mingting, but mainly because he worried for his own safety. After all, Huo Mingting’s deeds inevitably implicated him; he was an accomplice to the wrongdoing.
Huo Lindong didn’t make things difficult for Chu Yue over the Meishan Research Institute incident. This time, he had saved Ye Sheng, taking a blow on her behalf with great bravery, earning a merit in Huo Lindong’s eyes.
But the attacker who struck Ye Sheng wasn’t so fortunate.
On the second day at the hospital, Chu Yue heard that a special police unit had been temporarily dispatched to the Donglin Grand Hotel to investigate the assailant. Chu Yue thought his father had gone to great lengths for him and was moved to tears.
“What does it have to do with you?” Chu Ju coldly and ruthlessly questioned his son about everything that had happened the night before. Only then did Chu Yue learn that the whole operation was for Ye Sheng’s sake.
Huo Lindong had taken action to find the perpetrator.
Chu Shaowang, unloved by both father and grandmother, stared at the ceiling, sighing. When Huo Mingting arrived, he glanced at him sideways and shook his head.
“You’re pathetic.”
Huo Mingting: “?”
Chu Yue took a sip of the hot soy milk Huo Mingting had brought and asked, “Did you check the surveillance footage from the underground parking lot at the Donglin Grand Hotel last night?”
“I did.”
Huo Mingting sat with him at breakfast, looking up into Chu Yue’s gaze, and said, “The footage was taken by Grandpa Jiu. I didn’t get a copy.”
“And then?” Chu Yue stared at him. “You just let it go?”
Huo Mingting lowered his eyes. “Since Grandpa Jiu took charge, he won’t fail. I just wait for the results.”
“...” Chu Yue was speechless before the calmness on his face.
After a moment, he asked, “You said you fell for Ye Sheng and want to win her back. Don’t tell me I’m the only one who really believes that?”
Huo Mingting looked up at him, puzzled.
“It’s true.”
“So this is how you court someone? Doing nothing but talking, waiting for others to hand you the outcome?” Chu Yue stared at him in shock. “What on earth did you use to trick Ye Sheng into marrying you in the first place?”
Huo Mingting glanced at him.
“Oh, I get it now—you two had some special circumstances, a mishap that sparked a fire.”
Chu Yue put down his chopsticks, no longer hungry, thoroughly annoyed.
He clicked his tongue, face full of confusion.
“Look at me—my looks, my qualities—I’m no worse than you, right? So how come you’re so lucky, with such low emotional intelligence and poor character, yet you married someone as wonderful as Ye Sheng? And you even had such a smart, adorable child with her? But you didn’t cherish it and ended up losing her? What sort of person are you... Why haven’t I met such a great girl? Why haven’t I had a chance mishap like that?”
Huo Mingting narrowed his eyes and put down his chopsticks as well.
“What are you trying to do?”
Seeing a flicker of emotion cross his face, Chu Yue sneered inwardly: I’ll make you stop pretending.
“I’m not trying to do anything... If Ye Sheng really gets along with Grandpa Jiu, I wouldn’t dare compete or snatch her away. But if she’s still single, then, buddy, I really want to give it a try.”
Just as Chu Yue finished speaking, Huo Mingting stood up.
“What are you doing? No hitting.”
Chu Yue dodged toward the head of the bed, glaring at Huo Mingting’s dark face. “Why the rush? Even if I give you a chance, you’re useless at it. With your emotional skills and history, you’ll never get Ye Sheng. Better to give up now.”
Huo Mingting looked at him coldly. “Don’t make trouble and stop worrying about me. What does Ye Sheng have to do with you?”
“Just because it didn’t before doesn’t mean it won’t in the future.”
Chu Yue tapped his head. “My head got injured for Ye Sheng’s sake. Right now, I’m closer to her than you are. She took care of me all night and only left at dawn. Do you get that kind of treatment?”
“...” That one sentence hit Huo Mingting like a blow to the lungs.
He wanted to say that when he and Ye Sheng were still married, when he was sick or drunk, she also stayed up all night to care for him.
But now... they could barely sit down and have a proper conversation.
Why had things come to this?
—
Ye Sheng returned home in the early morning utterly exhausted. Every bone in her body screamed with fatigue.
She whispered a few words to the nanny dozing on the living room sofa, then habitually went to open the door to check on the children first.
Two slept on the bed, one on each side, with Xiao Bei also present.
Apparently, someone was afraid Huo Cong wouldn’t sleep well alone and had come to accompany him—the sweet little one.
Ye Sheng tiptoed over and kissed each child gently on the forehead. Xiao Bei slept soundly without moving, but Huo Cong opened his eyes.
“Cong’er, why aren’t you asleep yet?”
Ye Sheng paused and sat at the bedside, feeling his forehead—no fever—and softly asked, “Can’t sleep?”
Huo Cong’s eyes were a little red. He pressed his lips for a moment before slowly speaking.
“Are you... okay?”
Ye Sheng was taken aback again.
She caught the worry in the child’s eyes and realized Huo Cong had been waiting up, concerned for her and unable to sleep until she returned.
“I’m fine.” A pang of emotion welled up in her heart. She couldn’t help but feel touched and stroked Huo Cong’s little face. “Mommy is okay. Uncle Chu Yue showed up just in time and took a hit for me.”
“Ah, Uncle Eleven.”
Huo Cong’s eyes widened. “Is he dead?”
“...”
