Volume One, Chapter Ninety-Three: Get Out of My Sight
“You don’t even know the real reason for the divorce, so what makes you think you can win her back with such certainty?”
Chu Yue pointed at the flowers. “Stop putting on all this fancy nonsense. If I were Ye Sheng, I’d only think you were toying with me. There’d be nothing to be happy about. I may never have chased anyone myself, but I know sincerity is the most precious thing of all.”
He patted Huo Mingtin on the shoulder.
“Think it over carefully, kid.”
With that, Chu Yue stretched and yawned. “I still have a mission tonight, so I’m crashing at your place for a while. It’s quiet there.”
“And let me tell you, your Ninth Master is really something. I offended him once, and my old man’s been kicking me around for half a month. Even today, when I got home, he was still so mad he gave me two more kicks. Damn near killed me.”
Holding his waist and rubbing his thigh, he complained as he headed into the inner lounge of the CEO’s office.
Huo Mingtin, meanwhile, was still trying to digest what Chu Yue had just said. Had he really been that harsh with Ye Sheng before?
So harsh that even the people around him could no longer stand to watch.
He looked at the rose petals scattered across the floor and thought back on the past, only to find that most of his memories had gone blurry.
Was it true that the one inflicting pain never remembered what he had done?
And what about Ye Sheng?
Was she still in pain?
—
Ye Sheng did not have the leisure to dwell on the past, nor the mood to sink into suffering.
She was far too busy.
After finishing her morning clinic hours, Meng Juan arrived around noon with her nephew.
After a brief exchange of pleasantries between old classmates, Ye Sheng had Mia take the child and the child’s mother to the cafeteria for something to eat, while she sat in the consulting room and ate and talked with Meng Juan.
“I don’t have time to go out for lunch. Just eat with me here.”
Ye Sheng had Mia order two meals from a nearby Chinese restaurant. Each came with four dishes and a soup, generous enough to be considered a feast, hardly something to make do with.
Meng Juan had grown a little thinner since school days and had also learned how to wear makeup, making her look much more mature and polished. But in Meng Juan’s eyes, Ye Sheng was still as strikingly graceful and beautiful as ever. Even barefaced, she was impossible to look away from.
She was like the moon hanging at the edge of the sky, like the celestial maiden Chang’e in the Moon Palace. Even if she fell to earth, she still seemed to glow with immortality.
Ye Sheng had already learned Meng Yiyang’s basic condition. Since both had studied medicine, Meng Juan had not stayed in the capital after graduation and had returned to her hometown. She now worked at a city hospital in the neighboring city. She was in dermatology, while Ye Sheng was a specialist in hematology.
After a few exchanges about the specifics, there was a knock at the consulting room door. Ye Sheng looked up and paused. “Brother Wang?”
Wang Liang came in carrying a food container. “Ninth Master asked me to bring you some soup. Traffic was bad on the way, and I nearly got delayed.”
Ye Sheng hurried to take it. “Didn’t I tell Brother Lin not to keep sending me meals?”
Wang Liang grinned. “Ninth Master had an appointment with an old friend for dinner at a private kitchen restaurant today. Their beef bone soup there is excellent, so he told me to bring you a serving. Take it quickly so I can go back and report.”
Ye Sheng was both helpless and deeply touched by how consistently he looked after her. She accepted the soup and saw Wang Liang out.
“Perfect timing. I’ll enjoy it.”
She poured a bowl for Meng Juan. The broth had been simmered until rich and thick. After just one sip, both Ye Sheng’s and Meng Juan’s eyes lit up, their mouths filled with fragrance.
“Your boyfriend treats you really well,” Meng Juan said with an envious look, though she could not hide her curiosity.
Ye Sheng gave a faint smile. “He’s not my boyfriend. He’s my older brother.”
Meng Juan quickly said, “Oh,” twice, and the topic soon turned back to the child’s illness.
Ye Sheng still had clinic duty in the afternoon. Mia helped Meng Juan and the child complete the hospitalization procedures. Beds at Haisi Hospital were extremely hard to come by; if not for Ye Sheng’s help, no one knew how long they would have had to wait.
Meng Juan felt both moved and grateful. She thought back to how, at the end of her rope, she had steeled herself to contact Qin Minshu in hopes of asking for help, only to discover after sending the message that she had already been deleted as a friend.
The classmate bond from university, the fawning humility, the companionship—none of it had any value at all. Not the slightest meaning.
She had even naively believed that Qin Minshu would be the pillar she could cling to once she entered society.
She had not expected that the pillar would prove unreliable, and in the end, it was Ye Sheng, with whom she had barely exchanged a few words at school and had almost no real friendship, who reached out a helping hand.
Time really does reveal the heart.
After settling her nephew and sister-in-law, Meng Juan left the inpatient building, went to the outpatient clinic to wait for Ye Sheng to get off work, and planned to go to the class reunion with her that evening.
Unexpectedly, just as she entered the waiting area, she saw Qin Minshu.
Startled, Meng Juan lowered her head and turned to flee, only for Qin Minshu to call out, “Meng Juan?”
Meng Juan shut her eyes. Only two words echoed in her mind: I’m done for.
Ye Sheng was speaking with a patient in the consulting room when an argument suddenly broke out outside. Mia hurried out to see what was happening, only for the quarrel to grow even fiercer.
“Wait a moment,” Ye Sheng said, coming out of the consulting room to find utter chaos before her eyes.
Qin Minshu was red with anger, arguing with the nurse and with Mia, while Meng Juan trailed behind her, awkward and at a loss.
Mia was so angry her face had gone red. She said to Ye Sheng, “Director, Dr. Qin wants to cancel your appointment and transfer Meng Yiyang to her.”
Qin Minshu lifted her chin, looking at Ye Sheng with blatant arrogance.
Ye Sheng’s tone turned cold. “What are you making a scene for?”
“Director Ye, just tell me whether you’re cancelling it or not,” Qin Minshu said with a cold laugh, deliberately challenging her. “If you don’t, I can guarantee this patient won’t be able to stay in Haisi Hospital.”
All the patients in the waiting area turned to look over in unison, their faces stunned and bewildered. A few quietly raised their phones.
The impact was appalling.
Ye Sheng’s eyes and brows cooled completely as she said in a deep voice, “There are no patients who cannot stay in Haisi Hospital. Only doctors who are unworthy of their position and cannot stay.”
“Qin Minshu, starting now, you are fired.”
Ye Sheng said coldly, “Get out of my sight.”
